From Matakana to Bali: Sourcing, Healing, and the Science of Merino
The journey of The Specials has always been about more than just knitwear; it’s about the path we walk and the rituals that keep us grounded. This week, that path has led me away from the soft light of Matakana to the vibrant, humid energy of Bali on a sourcing and soul-searching trip.
Finding Stillness at Laura’s Healing Centre
I am currently staying at the Laura Healing Centre in North Denpasar. My niece, Laura, and her husband Jimmy—a Balinese energy healer—have spent seven years building this boutique sanctuary. It is a place "off the beaten track," designed for those seeking a moment of clarity and a way to reconnect with their own evolving life journey.
Being here is a reminder that we are always "Special," regardless of our age or stage. Whether we are focused on healing or expanding a brand, we are constantly refining our mission to be Better Than Ordinary.
Testing Technical Luxury in 30-Degree Heat
While I am here to explore new manufacturing options and grow the platform for The Specials, I’ve also put our hero fiber to the ultimate test.
Unlike the standard everyday cotton socks that come up when you google, which stay damp and trap heat in tropical climates, our New Zealand Merino blend has performed exactly as the science promised. Cotton is a fiber that absorbs moisture, but Merino is a miracle of nature—it breathes with you.
Even in 30-degree heat on sourcing excursions, the moisture-wicking and temperature-regulating properties of our socks have kept me comfortable all day. I often speak about the tactile benefit of our knitwear, but seeing it perform in the Bali humidity is a testament to true Technical Luxury. The naturally odor-resistant fibers mean they stay fresh for 2–3 wears, honoring both the wearer and the planet.
A Journey with No Expiry Date
Seeing Laura manage her own label here in Bali has inspired my vision for what is next. Since creating The Specials, I have been driven by the belief that the "expiry date" on relevance is a myth.
Expanding into new items and growing this platform is part of that evolving life journey. It’s about creating a soft, grounded foundation of quality that supports you, whether you are on a rugged trail, a gallery floor, or a sourcing trip in the heart of Indonesia.
